The high-tech approach to cart security

After my post about using gates to prevent cart theft, I noticed this sign outside of another convenience store just across the street.

Shopping Cart Sign

Attention shoppers! Our carts will lock if taken beyond the parking lot boundary. The boundary is marked by distinctive yellow lines.

This store opted not to corral their carts with gates that prevent customers from rolling the carts over to their car. Instead, the store opted for a more complex solution (presumably at a higher cost) in order to provide a better service to serve their customers.

Was it worth the extra cost?

  1. I always wonder how true that sign is. I think it’s more psychological..

I wondered the same. I was tempted to just try it, taking a cart across the boundary and see what happens.
