Switch Overload

Which makes more sense, to place switches all around the building, close to the appliances / outlets / lights which they operate, or to place all the switches in one place?

On the one hand, putting them all in one place does allow for centralized control without unnecessary walking around to turn on and off the flow of electricity. However, along with centralization comes confusion when trying to determine which switch controls what.

On the other hand, putting each switch near that which it controls does allow you to intuit what the switch controls. It also allows you  to be able to turn on and off those items which are close to you without moving about.  But, if you want to turn a lot of things on or off at once, the walking around can be tedious.
